On the highest settings on PC, Metal: Hellsinger is far from unpolished, but it doesn’t set out to blow you away. Still, this design choice complements Metal: Hellsinger’s focus on combat, speed, and high scores. While these stages range from icy wastes to fiery pits, and there are some genuinely jaw-dropping vistas along the way, their visual appeal is limited–it doesn’t feel as hellish or detailed as it quite could be. Level design ranges from open-air, multi-level arenas to tight, claustrophobic corridors, but every single one encourages you to keep moving. It not only feels rewarding, but supercharges your performance, incentivizing you to chase every opportunity to maintain your pace–whether it’s through killing, dash combos, shooting pottery, or collecting multiplyer pick-ups. Nothing compares to the feeling of hitting your stride in Metal: Hellsinger, nailing perfect kill after perfect kill, getting every quick reload, hitting that all-important 16X combo, and Matt Heafy suddenly starts shouting into the song you’ve spent five minutes listening to. That’s when the world-famous vocalists are thrown into the mix.
Unlike stable-buddies Painkiller and Doom Eternal, Metal: Hellsinger’s crucial soundtrack ebbs in and out as the action builds, based on its Fury combo system, working in 2X multipliers until you reach the top-tier 16X. Not that you hear these metal gods straight away. Jumping, dashing, reloading, and even changing direction ties into the game’s superb soundtrack, which features a laundry list of legends: Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), and Tatiana Shmailyuk (Jinjer) all lend their vocals for the action.
The reticle becomes invisible as you soon find yourself nodding your head to the music. Still, the shotgun and pistols feel like the most dependable combination–something I’m sure will be disproved by the choices of much better players than me as they vie for the top worldwide scores. Each one has its pros, cons, and individually charging Ultimate attacks, perfect for differing playstyles. This starting shotgun is joined by three other unlockable and interchangeable weapons: The Hounds (dual pistols), Vulcan (a time-bending crossbow), and Hellcrow (a pair of boomerang-like axes). Once you get Persephone, your first gun, everything falls into place your sword is all but reserved for instakill, life-regenerating slaughters. It often feels more about luck than skill, but Hellsinger is patient with you while you learn its quirks. It wasn’t a calibration issue, either the act of swinging your sword and making a connection with the game’s floating, zombie-like Marionettes– Metal: Hellsinger’s base-level enemies–never quite manages to match the beat.
